Former Punjab deputy chief minister and Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal was injured in a knife attack at a gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra, on Thursday, police said. Badal was on a three-day visit to the city with his wife, Harsimrat Kaur, and close associates when a Nihang, a member of a Sikh warrior order, attacked him with a kirpan, a ceremonial dagger. The attack took place a day after his arrival. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Harsimrat Kaur to inquire about Badal's health. Akali Dal leaders described the attack as a total failure of intelligence. The incident is the second attack on Badal in two years. He survived an assassination attempt on December 4, 2024, while performing sewa at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
