Prime Minister Andy Burnham has asked the justice secretary to find a way to stop the early release of PC Andrew Harper's killers, with a plan due in September. Burnham is said to be "determined" to reach a solution after growing pressure from Harper's family and police.
Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers were sentenced to 13 years for manslaughter and are due to be freed in January under an early release scheme intended to ease prison overcrowding. The justice secretary will present a plan in September to prevent more early releases, the PM said.
Burnham expressed confidence that the release can be halted.
