The death toll from Monday's 7.4-magnitude earthquake in western Colombia is reported at more than 200, according to France 24, while Japan Times puts it at over 180. Rescuers are racing to find survivors trapped under collapsed buildings, and on Tuesday a 32-year-old woman was pulled alive from the rubble. Many others remain missing.
The quake is the first major challenge for President Abelardo de la Espriella, who was inaugurated last Friday. Colombia is set to declare an economic emergency, which would give the president temporary authority to issue economic and tax decrees without congressional approval. Cali is among the cities affected.
