US Vice President JD Vance spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, reaffirming the two countries' commitment to strengthening partnerships in trade, defense, and emerging technologies.
The call came as the US Senate passed a bipartisan bill that would impose 100% tariffs on purchases of Russian oil, gas, and other exports that fund the war in Ukraine. The legislation, championed by the late Senator Lindsey Graham, would penalize countries that continue buying Russian energy.
During the conversation, Vance and Modi also exchanged views on international issues of mutual concern. The leaders' discussion coincided with the Senate's approval of the measure, which now advances to the House for consideration.
